Chimera A4, Monday Evening

After a quick trip to Jeff, God of Biscuits, Z sat cross-legged on her bunk with a cupcake with two candles stuck in it, singing softly to herself.

"Happy birthday to me,
Happy birthday to me,
Happy birthday, dear me,
Happy birthday to me."

Then she made a wish, blew out the candles, and ate the cupcake.

"Of course you can't! But you can accept a gift, right?" Evie bounced on her toes, looking pleased. "Since there is no ice cream, and there really truly should be. Look!" She popped the lid off the tin. "Chocolate chip! My mum is an excellent baker, I should tell you."

Z bit her lip, peering at the cookies. "Maybe just one."

"Or three," Evie said hopefully. "Because one is just what I'd share with a friend. And so is two. But if you have one more, Or two more than two, it's more like I brought snacks."

Z very carefully picked out three cookies. "I'll just take these, then."

"Yay!" Evie took one for herself, then tilted her head. "So, are you sixteen, or seventeen, or eighteen today?"

"Technically, I'm two," Z said around a mouthful of cookie. "Or seventeen."

"Time travel?" Evie asked, swallowing. "I'm one-hundred-and-six!" She grinned. "But seventeen is good as well."

"Yup," Z said with a nod. "I'm from fifteen years in the future. And you seem remarkably well-preserved."

"Thank you! I cheated, of course." Evie nodded solemnly. "I had myself mummified at sixteen." She giggled. "And used the same preservatives on the cookies in 1917."

Z eyed her remaining cookies warily. "Really?"

Evie shook her head and took another bite of her cookie, still giggling. "No, no. Time travel, like you. These cookies are fresh. I'm only sixteen, really. I promise!"

"Oh, that's all right, then," Z said. Then she took a bite of her second, unmummified cookie.
