(Syd and) Z's Room, SPD HQ, 2023

There were times Z missed Fandom High. When she was getting shot at or having cars thrown at her or doing the obstacle course, for instance. That stuff only happened in Fandom like, once every couple of months, not once a week. And Luke had been a much better roommate than Syd.

There were other times Z didn't miss the past at all. Like right now, hanging out and reading old articles on the frenzy surrounding the release of that teen vampire movie and laughing her head off. Sometimes distance was a good thing.

There's a knock on Z's door. "It's me!" Bridge calls out. "Bridge," he adds, after a moment.

"I don't believe you," Z called. "I think it's some other me." Which was, from her, a much less insane statement than it might be from anyone else. But still only teasing. "It's open!"

"Why would you think it's some other you?" Bridge asks, as he presses the button to open the slidey door and comes inside, holding a paper bag in one hand. "I don't sound anything like a Z."

"You could be faking your voice," Z said, and, after a beat, "and wearing a mask."

Bridge blinks, and looks down. "I'm not Z-shaped," he points out.

"No, okay, you got me there," Z admitted. "Whatcha got there, Carson?" she asked, looking at the bag.

"Cookies," Bridge admits. "Want some?" he offers. "I mean, it's not toast or anything, but cookies are still good."

Z leaned toward him and said in a conspiratorial whisper, "Some people would say cookies are better than toast."

Z? So one of those people. She made grabby hands. "Gimme!"

"Even buttery," of course there's a fingerwiggle, "toast?" Bridge asks, in a tone approaching disbelief.

"We'll talk when the buttery--" Z's fingers wiggled of their own accord-- "toast comes with chocolate chips."

"You know, our food comes from a Synthetron," Bridge points out. "I could program it to have chocolate chips."

"That would be cheating," Z argued.

"I could probably find a bakery or something that makes it, then," he says, deciding to make it a mission to do just that.

Z doubted toast would trump cookies even with the addition of chocolate chips, but hey, Bridge needed hope, right? She grinned at him and said, "Good luck. I'm sure it's out there, I mean, they'll put anything in bread, right?"

"My point exactly," Bridge says with a nod, obligingly handing over the cookies. But not before snagging one for himself, of course.

Oooooh cookies. "I can't help but feel you're missing the point," Z said. "Which is, cookies. Aren't you a trained law enforcement professional?"

"Yes?"
