Z was goofing around on her computer, downloading hip-hop with bad grammar, when a window popped up announcing new mail.

Subject: This is your check-in

Cadet Delgado,

As your parole officer, it has been brought to my attention that I should, from time to time (say, at least once a semester) check to make sure you are actually where you are supposed to be. As I don't feel like time traveling at the present time, e-mail will have to suffice. So, please let me know you haven't run off, and we'll call it a day.

Z frowned at the e-mail for a moment before firing off her response.

I am, of course, still attending Fandom High in the town of Fandom on Fandom Island, Virginia, 2007. I have to admit I'm kind of surprised you didn't know that. I would have thought Dr. Manx would have kept you updated.

Maybe because she'd been e-mailing Z and Bridge fairly regularly to check up on them, and had recently visited the school and held room inspections? This was the kind of thing Z had assumed would be passed on to her parole officer, but apparently not. Surely Kat had a good reason for keeping Officer Blake out of the loop, though?

Jamie knocked lightly on the door and stuck his head into the room. "Hey you."

"Hey!" Z said. "Haven't seen you in a while."

"Went to Philadelphia for a couple of days to hang with Kawalsky," Jamie said stepping into the room. "What's been going on with you?"

"Oh, you know, the usual," Z said with a shrug. "Stealing music, telling my parole officer I'm absolutely not stealing music..."

"You have a parole officer?" Jamie said with a grin. "Wow. I always knew you were a badass. What did you get busted for?"

Z shrugged. "Stealing clothes. I wasn't gonna keep them."

"See? I was not expecting that," Jamie teased. "I figured you'd probably be joyriding on a flying car or something."

Z laughed. "No. Um. Our cars still have wheels."

"See? Now I'm a little disappointed by the future," Jamie joked. "Where are the flying cars?"

"I think the flying cars are, like, always going to be 'ten years in the future,'" Z told him. "To taunt us."
