Z was poking around on her computer, watching So You Think You Can Dance vids on YouTube (as you do) when a new e-mail message popped up.

From Dr. Manx.

Z immediately picked up her phone and handwavily called Bridge.

"He e-mailed me once right after I got here to ask if I'd committed any felonies yet," Z admitted. "That's about it." Then she took a deep breath and opened the message.

Bridge peers over her shoulder. "Well?"

"'Cadets,'" Z read off the screen. "'I hope you have enjoyed your summer, and am pleased to see that your school is once again standing. Congratulations.' She knew about the school??"

"...She never said anything last time!" Bridge says, flailing only just a little. "Remember? There wasn't a word about the school being exploded and we didn't *tell* her and how did shes *know*?"

"I don't know!" Z sort of wailed. "I didn't tell her!"

"Well she doesn't seem *mad*," Bridge points out hopefully. "I mean, there's nothing in there chewing us out for not mentioning it last time we wrote. So. Um. Yay that?"

"I guess that's something," Z said. "I mean, she's not exactly dressing us down." Then she continued reading the e-mail. "'I also need to update your transcripts, so please let me know what classes you're taking ASAP. Hopefully the two of you made practical decisions with your course selection. Yours, Dr. Katherine Manx, SPD Earth.'"

"See, that's not so bad," Bridge says. "She's just... curious about what we're up to. Despite the fact that she apparently has some idea already."

"Sooo, what should I tell her?" Z asked. "About our classes, I mean," she added, fingers poised over the keyboard. "Hey, what're you taking, anyway?"

"Aly's class on protecting people, and that one with the teacher who's name I didn't recognise so they must be new. Tactics."

"Oh, hey, I'm in both of those," Z said as she typed. "And one more, um, Comparative Religions."

"I thought about adding a third class," Bridge says. "But then I realised I spend one day a week in the library and I can just make up for it there."

"Makes sense," Z agreed. "Okay, how about I just tell her what we're in and don't address the school thing at all?"

"Good plan, I like that plan," Bridge says with a nod.

Z wrote up a terse, bare-bones e-mail to Kat and sent it off into the internet, through time and space. "Okay, so, now we shouldn't hear from her again for a few months, right?"

Bridge just puts his head in his hands and sighs as Z says that.

Z made a face. "I shouldn't have said that, should I?"

"Uh huh," Bridge mutters from behind his hands. "You've gone and jinxed it."

Z covered her own face with her hands. "I take it back!" she moaned.
