Z stared out the window as I-15 rolled by, trying to think of what to do next. She'd spent most of the day in Vegas trying and failing to decide, and hoping to confuse Bridge thoroughly enough he'd give up and go back to Fandom. If he'd even followed her to start with. In the end she'd just picked the next bus leaving and hopped on, same as she had in San Angeles.

"Where you going?" her seatmate asked her. She just blinked at her. Oh. Conversation. Right. "I'm going back to school," the girl added, "in Salt Lake City. Are you a freshman?"

"No," Z said. "No, I'm not in college."

"Then where are you going?"

Z thought about that for a moment, because she still didn't know. "Away," she finally said.
